B.2.f. Majors and Minors

Students have three options for academic study:Ìý

  • the pursuit of a single majorÌý
  • the pursuit of two majors (double major)
  • theÌýpursuit of one major and one minor.Ìý

The pursuit of any other combination of multiple majors and/or minors is not permitted.ÌýStudent transcripts will list the name of the major, any double major or minor, and the grade on theÌýSenior Capstone Experience.ÌýStudents should be aware that the pursuit of a double major or a major and a minor may require more than four years to complete.Ìý

Pre-registration for the last two years before graduation should be undertaken with the advice and guidance of an academic advisor in the student's chosen major. Thus a major must be declared and an advisor in that major must be designated no later than March 1 during the sophomore year (usually the fourth semester of attendance). This is accomplished by filing an Advisor Designation and Major/Minor Declaration Form with the Office of the Registrar.

Requirements for a major are as follows:ÌýÌý

  • fulfilling the requirements as designated by the student’s major department;Ìý
  • maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.00 in courses required for the major;
  • passing aÌýSenior Capstone ExperienceÌýin the major;Ìý
  • meetingÌýthe major residency requirements.Ìý

Policy for double majorsÌý

A student may complete a second major at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ by fulfilling the following criteria:Ìý

  • declaring a second major by filing an Advisor Designation and Major/Minor Declaration Form with the Office of the Registrar no later than December 1 during the senior year (usually the seventh semester of attendance);
  • designate a secondary advisory in that major;
  • completing the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ requirements for both majors;
  • maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.00 in the courses that comprise each major;Ìý
  • passing the Senior Capstone Experience for both majors;Ìý
  • completingÌýboth majors prior to the awarding of the undergraduate degree.Ìý

Policy for minorsÌý

A student may complete a minor by fulfilling the following requirements:Ìý

  • Declaring a minor by filing an Advisor Designation and Major/Minor Declaration Form with the Office of the Registrar no later than December 1 during the senior year (usually the seventh semester of attendance) ;Ìý
  • completing the course requirements for the minor as specified in the departmental entry in the Catalog;Ìý
  • successfully completing at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ at least three of the courses that constitute the minor; Ìý
  • maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.00 in the courses that comprise the minor; Ìý
  • completingÌýboth a major and the minor prior to the awarding of the undergraduate degree.Ìý

Changes to the above declarations can be made by completing and filing a new Advisor Designation and Major/Minor Declaration Form with the Office of the Registrar no later than November 18 during the senior year (usually the seventh semester of attendance).
