Employment Assistance

Whether you are a senior trying to land your first full-time job or a student simply looking for part-time work to earn some spending money during the school year, the Office of Career Services is available to help you successfully navigate through the job-search process. Because each student鈥檚 needs are unique, you are encouraged to schedule an individual appointment with a member of the Career Services Office for personalized assistance with your job search.

Full-Time, Part-Time, and Seasonal Employment

The Office of Career Services has many resources to help you find a job after 黑料不打烊 or during your time as a student.

  • 鈥 As Career Services' internal job and internship posting system, Hire黑料不打烊* gives you access to a wide variety of job-search resources and local and nationwide opportunities. Postings include post-graduate jobs, internships, part-time jobs, summer opportunities, student employment opportunities, and more. This is also where all available on-campus student employment positions are listed.
  • for great information about upcoming events, programs, job and internship leads, alumni highlights and more.
  • Career and Internship Fair聽鈥 Career Services hosts its annual Career and Internship Fair each spring in early March with recruiters from around the region who are available to talk with students about internship and employment opportunities at their companies or organizations. 颁濒颈肠办听here聽for more information on this year's event.
  • Employer Information Sessions and On-Campus Interviews聽鈥 We work to bring a variety of recruiters to campus each year to inform students about available employment opportunities at their companies or organizations. Recruiters often conduct on-campus interviews with interested students, as well. Such events have recently included recruiters from companies like Windstream Communications, Murphy USA, Stephens Inc., and Fast Enterprises to organizations like Teach For America, the U.S. Department of State, Peace Corps, and City Year.   • Employer and Alumni Connections 鈥 Through various outreach efforts, Career Services staff members work to build relationships with a wide variety of companies and organizations to increase employment opportunities for 黑料不打烊 students. We are happy to help identify and refer eligible students for job placement at these companies and organizations. 黑料不打烊 also has a large alumni base, and we can assist students in connecting with alumni in their chosen career field for networking as well as job placement.

鈥淕ap Year鈥 Employment

Many 黑料不打烊 students choose to seek some type of short-term employment after graduating during what is commonly known as a 鈥済ap year鈥 鈥 a period in which students undertake activities such as traveling, volunteering, research, or working abroad before pursuing graduate school or entering the workforce, full time. Recent 黑料不打烊 graduates have spent their gap year working with programs all over the world, including Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Teach For America, City Year, WWOOF, and overseas TEFL programs. Information on these and other opportunities available to students who are considering a gap year is available in the Office of Career Services as well as the Miller Center for Vocation, Ethics, and Calling. Opportunities may also be found utilizing the resources listed above.

Employment on Campus

Job opportunities are available on campus in many different academic and administrative departments. Both Federal Work-Study (FWS) and non-Federal Work-Study (called 黑料不打烊 Work Program) opportunities exist; however, positions are limited. Students who proactively begin seeking employment on campus as early in the semester as possible tend to have the best chances of securing an available position. If you are eligible for FWS funding, this information will also be featured on your Financial Aid Award Letter.

Beginning the job-search process can be intimidating, as can the application and interviewing processes that come along with it. The Office of Career Services is here to help ease your stress and guide you through the entire process 鈥 from start to finish! Contact us for assistance in any of the following areas:

  • Online Resources聽鈥 The Internet is a powerful tool for researching industries and organizations as well as identifying available employment opportunities. We can show you how to properly utilize this important resource and provide you with some of the best websites to use in your search based on what you want to do, who you want to work with, and where you want to live. A listing of some of these websites is available on the Career Services website under the Resources tab.
  • Networking Tips聽鈥 Who you know may be more important than what you know. Recent studies indicate that the vast majority of job opportunities are never publicly advertised. In these cases, employers depend on internal recruitment strategies and 鈥渨ord-of-mouth鈥 referrals. Therefore, networking plays a much larger role in the job-search process than ever before. From requesting an informational interview to attending professional networking events to utilizing social media sites like to connect with alumni and potential employers, it鈥檚 important for you to know successful networking strategies and to be confident in implementing them.
  • Resume Development and Review聽鈥 Whether you鈥檙e starting your resume from scratch or just need help making a few minor updates to your existing copy, Career Services can help you create a polished, well-organized piece that showcases your education, experience, achievements, and skills.
  • Cover Letter Writing聽鈥 Not sure what to include in your cover letter or how to organize it? Need help explaining why you鈥檙e the best candidate for a job in one page? Let us assist you in crafting a personalized letter that will land you an interview.
  • Interviewing Process and Techniques聽鈥 Interviewing can be a terrifying experience for any job seeker. Preparation is the key to success. From discussing common interview questions to addressing ways to conduct yourself in different scenarios to answering questions about appropriate attire, Career Services can help you prepare for any type of interview, including in-person, phone, and Skype interviews.
  • Mock Interviews聽鈥 Mock interviews are generally tailored for a specific job opportunity or industry and provide students with interviewing practice as well as feedback on social cues, dress, answers to questions, and overall presentation. Mock interviews are scheduled with a Career Services staff member or an alumnus in your intended career field. Mock phone and Skype interviews are also available.
  • Professional Etiquette聽鈥 Is it acceptable to have a cocktail or two at a company鈥檚 鈥渕eet and greet鈥 event? Should I send a thank-you note after an interview? What are good topics of conversation for dinner with a prospective employer? Let us teach you how to conduct yourself professionally during the job-search process.
  • Accepting, Declining, and Negotiating Offers聽鈥 After a lot of hard work and preparation, you鈥檝e aced the interview and have received a job offer. Maybe more than one offer. Or an offer with a salary level or benefits package you鈥檙e not comfortable accepting. Or maybe even one at a company for which you longer wish to work. The Career Services staff can advise you in the process of accepting, declining, or negotiating job offers.

Career Exploration

Are you having trouble beginning your job search because you鈥檙e still not quite sure what you want to do? Career Services staff members are happy to help you explore your options. Our subscription to 聽gives access to another helpful 鈥 and free 鈥 resource. This website allows you to learn about the common career areas and types of employers that hire people with a particular major. It also provides strategies designed to maximize career opportunities as well as occupational outlook information and links to related job postings.
