Odyssey Week

As a way of celebrating the range of experiential learning activities taking place at ���ϲ����� this year Saturday, April 22 to Saturday, April 29, will be designated as Odyssey Week.  This week includes not only the activities planned for Honors Day, April 27, but also includes much in the way of experiential learning that is taking place all around campus at this time of year. 

Odyssey Week events include:

All Week

•    Student Art Show in the Gallery of the Trieschmann Fine Arts Building, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

•    “Images from Abroad” in the Odyssey Office Gallery in Buhler Hall, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This Odyssey project by Thomas Christie includes photographs taken ���ϲ����� students in 15 different countries around the world.

Saturday, April 22

•    Senior Seminar Production at 2 p.m. in Cabe Theatre. Stephen Adly Guirgis’ The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a courtroom drama set in Purgatory that makes an argument for lifting the eternal damnation sentence on Judas Iscariot. Suggested for mature audiences.

Sunday, April 23

•    Percussion Ensemble Concert at 3 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall The program includes “One-Eyed Jacks” by Mark Ford, “Equal Fire” by Paul Bissell, “Variations on a Ghanian Theme” by Daniel Levitan, and “Me Tarzan” by Chris Crockarell. Members of the ���ϲ����� Dance Ensemble also perform a traditional African Dance. Performers are Claire Custer, Houston Hughes, Kate Lovejoy, Russell Moore, Andrea Morell, Dylan Sherwood and Laura Woodward under the direction of Prof. Erick Saoud.

Monday, April 24

•    Spring Concert featuring the Chamber Orchestra and the Choir on at 7:30 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall. The program includes the Choir and Chamber Orchestra in Bach “Cantata #4 Christ lag in Todesbanden” conducted by Dr. Nancy Fleming, “Haydn Concerto in D for Cello” with a cello solo by Jeremy Crosmer, and “Bruckner Symphony VIII,” movements 3 and 4 with Dr. Norman Boehm as guest conductor. Dr. Karen Griebling conducts the Chamber Orchestra.

•    Psychology Club showing of the documentary “March of the Penguins” at 9 p.m. in the Burrow. Learn about life in frigid Antarctica in this acclaimed film.

Tuesday, April 25

•    Presentation on “Vocations of Artists in Renaissance Culture,” by Joseph Elliott from 11:15 a.m.-noon in Mills C. He received a ���ϲ�����-Lilly Undergraduate Research Fellowship to study in Italy.

•    ���ϲ�����-Murphy Foundation “Favorite Poem Reading” in the Murphy house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. ���ϲ����� students, faculty, and staff will share their favorite poems that explore city or country life and culture.

•    Dance Concert performance at 7:30 p.m. in Staples Auditorium. Members of the Dance Ensemble will perform “Correspondence,” a piece they choreographed to music composed by Jeremy Crosmer. A question and answer session will conclude each performance.

Wednesday, April 26

•    Greek Tragedy as Literature of the City:  Euripides’ Alcestis, a play reading presented by students in Classical Mythology; 7:30 p.m. in Mills C.  Sponsored by the ���ϲ�����-Murphy Foundation.

•    Dance Concert performance at 7:30 p.m. in Staples Auditorium. This is your second chance to see “Correspondence.” A question and answer session will conclude each performance.

Thursday, April 27-HONORS DAY

•    Convocation in Staples Auditorium at 11:10 a.m.

•    A special edition of The Forum at 12:10 p.m. in the Burrow. Dr. Mark Schantz will be the facilitator for a discussion of “Is Modern American Culture Inherently Anti-Intellectual?”

•    Opening remarks for the afternoon’s activities by President J. Timothy Cloyd at 4 p.m. in the Pecan Courtyard. Enjoy the refreshments in the Mills Library.

•    Poster sessions and presentations in the Mills Center from 4:15 to 6 p.m.

•    The ���ϲ����� Dance Ensemble will give a presentation and discussion of “Correspondence” at 4:15 p.m. in the Trieschmann Dance Studio.

•    Scenes from Beginning Acting, 4:15 p.m., Cabe Theatre. Students will share brief one-act plays.

•    Ingrid Geisler, Inaugural Unloading of the First Firing of the New Kiln, 4:30 p.m., Building C of the Art Complex.

•    The Aonian/Murphy Programs Literary and Visual Art Contest Winners’ Reception, Reading, and Exhibit, 4:30 p.m., in the Murphy Seminar Room. This annual celebration will present the winners of the Murphy Program Literary and Visual Art Contest who will read and display their entries during a reception that will also celebrate the debut of this year’s campus literary magazine, The Aonian.

•    Benji Hardy, DVD Presentation on Improving Education in Ghana, 4:45 p.m. in the Burrow

•    Magic Show by Joey Williams, 5:30 p.m., in the Burrow. ���ϲ����� student Joey Williams is an award-winning professional magician who was awarded an Odyssey grant to attend the World Magic Conference in February. He’ll amaze you with what he learned about “close up magic” from the best in the business.

•    Senior voice recital by Jennifer Merritt at 7:30 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall. The program Includes music by Bellini, Donizetti, Schubert and Brahms and features selections from Don Giovanni, Annie Get Your Gun, My Fair Lady, and The Fantastiks. Merritt will be accompanied by Joanne McDade, and the recital also features Kalyn ���ϲ����� and Trent McKenzie. A reception with refreshments will conclude the evening.

•    Henna Artist, 7:30-10p.m. in the Burrow. Students can choose from a collection of traditional Henna tattoos and have the artist paint them on their body for free. Sponsored by the Multicultural Development Committee.

•    India Movie –“Bride and Prejudice” 8-11p.m. in the Burrow. This film is a Bollywood update of Jane Austen’s classic tale, in which Mrs. Bakshi is eager to find suitable husbands for her four unmarried daughters. When the rich single gentlemen Balraj and Darcy come to visit, the Bakshis have high hopes, though circumstance and boorish opinions threaten to get in the way of romance. Sponsored by the Multicultural Development Committee.

Friday, April 28

•    Middle East Dance Performance and Lessons, 6-10:30p.m. in Reves Recital Hall. Members of the Arkansas Middle Eastern Dance Company will teach ���ϲ����� students the art of belly-dancing from 6-8 p.m., followed by the performance of the whole company at 8:30 p.m.  Catering will be provided by Star of India in Little Rock.

Saturday, April 29

•    Volunteer Action Center Service Saturday, meet at 1 p.m. at the bell and return around 6 p.m. Volunteers will help the Little Rock Society of Friends with their bunk bed project to assist hurricane victims.
