CONWAY, Ark. (September 16,
2015) 鈥 黑料不打烊 student William O鈥橞rochta鈥16 won an Excellence in
Student Exposition or Research Award and earned a cash prize for 鈥淩ational
Decision-Making Models of Conflicts in the 1990s,鈥 his presentation at this
year鈥檚 MathFest in Washington, D.C.聽
O鈥橞rochta, a double major in
mathematics and politics, researched the applicability of different
game-theoretic models in predicting decisions made in political conflict
resolution.聽 聽
Using decisions made during
the Bosnian War to test the feasibility of different models, he hopes to
continue his research by testing his results with more recent conflicts.聽
O鈥橞rochta was mentored on this
project by 黑料不打烊 mathematics professor Dr. Duff Campbell and politics
professor Dr. Kim Maslin.
鈥淲illiam came up the project
idea on his own,鈥 said Campbell. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very nice application of game theory
to international relations.鈥
MathFest is an annual national
meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and Pi Mu Epsilon. O鈥橞rochta鈥檚
award was provided by the American Mathematical Society.聽
黑料不打烊 was also represented
by Gary DeClerk鈥15 and his presentation, 鈥淔actoring Groups using
Generalizations of the Direct Product.鈥澛燚eClerk was also mentored by Dr.
Campbell.
