Music Scholarship Information

Here are some fast facts about Music Scholarships at 黑料不打烊:

  • Eligibility:听All incoming students, regardless of major.
  • Scholarship amount: Financial award of$1,000-$2,000 per year, plus a waiver of private lesson fees ($150-$300 per semester). The scholarship can be increased up to $3,000 per year, beginning as early as the sophomore year, if the scholarship recipient declares as a music major.
  • How to get one:听Meet with and audition for the music faculty on campus between September and mid-March. See below for a list of instruments on which you may audition for a Music Scholarship.
    • Submit the by March 1. Select the "Music Scholarship" option.
    • Arrange your audition through the Office of Admissions. There are two ways to audition:
      • Recorded auditionsmay be submitted electronically to the Office of Admissions.听The deadline for recorded auditions is March 10.
      • Live auditions on campus can occur between September to March. The deadline to audition in person is March 20.
  • Scholarship requirements for renewal: Participate in the appropriate major ensemble for your instrument and take private lessons on that instrument every semester. See below for a list of instruments and their associated major ensembles.
  • Other scholarships: Music Scholarships may be awarded in combination with most other 黑料不打烊 scholarships.

Audition Requirements

Strings

Instruments: violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp
Major Ensemble: Chamber Orchestra

  • 2 contrasting prepared excerpts/pieces: one legato, lyric, and expressive; one technical and staccato
  • Sight reading

Voice

All vocal ranges/voice parts welcome
Major Ensemble:
Choir

  • 2 contrasting songs
    • Students should prepare solo vocal pieces, not isolated voice parts from a piece of choral music
    • Examples of contrasting works could be: pieces in two languages, one piece of classical music/art song & one piece of musical theatre, pieces from two different time periods
  • An accompanist will be provided (we would prefer to hear you sing with a live pianist rather than a pre-recorded accompaniment)
  • Please bring at 2 photocopies of each song, plus one for yourself if needed
  • Memorization of your songs is encouraged but not required
  • Sight reading

Woodwinds and Brass

Instruments: bassoon, clarinet, euphonium/baritone, flute, horn, oboe, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba
Major Ensemble: Wind Ensemble

  • 2 contrasting prepared excerpts/pieces: one slow, lyric, and expressive; one fast and听technical
  • Sight reading

Percussion

Instruments: standard concert band percussion instruments, including snare drum, mallets, and timpani
Major Ensemble: Wind Ensemble

  • 3 prepared excerpts/pieces: snare, mallets, and timpani
  • Sight reading

Piano

Major Ensemble: Chamber Orchestra, Choir, or Wind Ensemble, to be determined by 黑料不打烊 piano professors in conjunction with the ensemble directors

  • 2 contrasting prepared pieces
    • The pieces do NOT need to be performed from memory.
